MONIQUE FRYDMAN: L'Autre Rive
Galerie Dutko is pleased to present an exhibition of works by French artist Monique Frydman from September 14th to October 21st, 2023. For her fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, we will be showcasing her latest series of paintings titled "L'Autre Rive" (The Other Shore), created between 2022 and 2023.
"I would like something like the Edge of the World for my paintings." These words are from Monique Frydman, dated December 2nd, 1988, found in her studio notebooks and published by Atelier Contemporain in 2019.
As a major figure in abstract painting, Monique Frydman has often explored the concept of time in her work, particularly in relation to the process of painting and the creation of a canvas. When does a work begin? At the Edge, as something that is in the process of emerging, expanding, halfway between desire and mastery. The question of the time of painting and the time of the painting itself is always present in Monique Frydman's work. This question, which already preoccupied the artist in 1988, remains relevant in her practice.
Created between 2022 and 2023, this new body of work is titled "The Other Shore." The use of pastels, a hallmark of Frydman's art, is here much more diluted and lighter. The brush also plays a more prominent role as Frydman reworks the marks left by the blocks of pastels. As a result, these recent canvases seem imbued with a more watercolor-like quality. While in previous painting series such as "The Riverbanks" (2019), "The Edge" (2019), or "The Dawns" (2019), color asserted itself boldly, the works presented here carry a sense of liquidity. The canvas is sometimes left bare, allowing the texture of cotton or linen to be felt. These raw spaces, inherent to the physical nature of the artwork, merge with the lightness found in Frydman's use of pastels. The canvases of "The Other Shore" belong to an intermediate space, where a mysterious transparency is expressed.
Monique Frydman's works are deeply influenced by what she sees, perceives, and feels through the ever-changing interplay of light, colors, and vibrations of the surrounding landscape near her studio. This powerful source of inspiration, which has become self-evident to her and to which she is highly attuned, is transformed and revealed through the abstract language of her painting. Frydman's landscapes are constructed and deconstructed over time, becoming a reflection of her inner landscapes and bearing traces of her personal history and the history of painting itself.
